The closest stories can get to truth is analogy.
I love stories. I've been writing them in earnest since sixth grade. I have two published fantasy novels that have been purchased and read by people I don't know. My main hobby is role playing mostly as the dungeon master for various D&D groups.
Unfortunately most news content is no longer straight reporting, it is narrative driven storytelling even if there is an event in the background - basically it's "based on a true story". It's not difficult to see why. Someone wants to be known and famous (and earn their ridiculous salary) for their clever insight, not for being a projector. No matter how focused, crisp, or accurate. It's just not as "sexy" as delivering a pithy barb or directing conversation and information through questions.
Most of us would rather read a story than a news article. So they've turned the articles into stories.
When we take in analogies and think they're the truth, we're not only getting misleading information, we get caught and snagged when the analogy breaks down, as they always do. Who has ever found a perfect analogy?
